PERSONALITY:
Clare is rather quiet when people first meet her. Most of the people in her life that she's let in have left her or hurt her, and because of that she started to build up a wall. She has a huge fear of being abandoned and figures that, if you don't lt a person in, they can't hurt you when they walk out. And in her eyes, they always do walk out. She can come off as rude due to how reserved she is around people, but it's not out of being stuck-up, it's just out of being afraid. She's shy, but it doesn't take too much to break through Clare's shell, and once you do it's very hard to get her to shut up.
Clare has the curiosity of the children in the classrooms she helps out in. She can ask people questions over and over and over, to the point of it getting almost annoying. Her curiosity is genuine, though. She loves to learn about other people, much more than she likes telling them about herself. This is how she became such a good listener; she actually wants to listen, and has spent most of her life being the listener instead of the talker. She's the type of person that people feel comfortable dumping their problems on, because she's the type of person that asks about them and tries her best to be welcoming and helpful. It's her own problems that Clare has trouble with.
She's very, very bad about bottling things up. Clare likes to keep her own issues to herself and isn't very comfortable sharing them, even though she knows that doing this causes more harm than good. She can't help it, though. She bottles things up and let's them continue to pile in her conscious, until finally, she just snaps. The friendly little sweetheart disappears behind yelling or tears when she finally does explode from holding back her emotions for so long, and she always feels guilty after that happens. She hates snapping at people and repeatedly apologizes when she does, never knowing how to make it up to the person. She knows how bad of a habit this is, but she can't bring herself to break it.
You see, Clare is extremely stubborn. She's inherited her entire personality from her mom, except for this one trait that she got from her dad. Clare can be as stubborn as a mule when she's pushed to it. She stands by her beliefs and stands by the people she cares about, no questions asked. Her stubbornness can definitely land her in trouble, but it's another thing that she just can't help. She's loyal to the people that she loves, and that means standing by them no matter what comes their way.
PHYSICAL:
First things first, there is absolutely nothing threatening about Clare's appearance. She's human through and through in just about every aspect. She's rather short, standing at only about 5'5 or 5'6, and has a very petite build. She doesn't have much muscle to her because, well, her clumsiness makes exercising one of her arch enemies. All of her bike riding and running gave her a little bit of muscle to her otherwise tiny frame, though. Not only is she not a physical threat, but she's much better at pulling off a puppy dog pout than a glare. Her features are just too friendly for her to appear dangerous, from her nearly always smiling lips to her bright-eyed expressions.
When it comes to her clothes, she's not an extravagant fashionista - she wears what she's comfortable with. Clare isn't one that particularly likes to stand out, and that's reflected in her style. She'll dress up sometimes when she goes out with a cute top and jeans, but when it comes to lazy days, bring on the yoga pants and t-shirts! One thing that she always wears is a necklace her mom gave her when she was around nine years old. It's a gold locket with a butterfly on it, sapphire-like stones used in the wings. Very, very rarely will anyone ever see her without it. Other than that she's not very big on jewelry. She'll wear the occasional stud earrings, but never anything too eye-catchy.
Like many residents of Forks, even though she's new to the area, Clare has pretty pale skin. She hates how much of a fight it is for her to tan, but it is a nice contrast against her dark hair. She typically keeps her hair a dark brown color that she'll usually wear straight or in a braids or a messy bun. She gets too impatient to curl her stubborn hair and doesn't do it very often. Moving on to her eyes: they're a light blue color that she got from her dad, and definitely the feature about her that stands out the most.
HISTORY:
Clare was the first born, and only, child of Davis and Elisabeth Hadley. She spent most of her life in a comfortable little town in North Carolina, and for a long time, life was pretty good for her. Her dad worked a lot, but she had her mom home with her, and her mom became little Clare's best friend. She'd spend her days with her having random dance parties and run to hug her daddy's legs when he came home from work (since she was barely tall enough to reach his knee caps at the time). Everything was normal, picture perfect, happy. Until they started fighting.
Clare was about nine when the fighting between her parents started, and at first she thought it was nothing. People disagreed, right? And disagreements often led to fighting. She figured that it'd stop eventually and that she just had to wait out the storm. That turned out not to be the case, though. Instead it only got worse, until one night, ten-year-old Clare overheard them arguing in their room. She stayed quiet, and the next thing she knew doors were slamming, and her dad walked out. All she could hear after that was her mom crying, and that was all she heard throughout the months that followed her dad leaving. Clare was lost - she was only a kid after all, and she was hurting, too. She had no idea how to comfort herself and her mom.
She found comfort in a boy around her age in her class named Jayden. The two were practically attached at the hip and whenever he was around, whether it be to read with her or play hide-and-seek, Clare's mind was kept busy and she felt genuinely happy. Pretty soon, they deemed each other best friends. A few months after her dad left, though, he came back. Her mom welcomed him home, but Clare was much more hesitant. She never was one to hold a grudge, but he'd hurt them. He hadn't even called after he left, so Clare behaved much more coldly toward him, refusing to talk to him around the house and intentionally ignoring him when he talked to her. Eventually she gave up on the cold shoulder, and after she and her dad had a very long (way too grown up, in her opinion) talk, things went almost back to normal, and she was just happy to have him home.
Other than the still lingering tension in the house, things started to look up for Clare. The next few years of her life were normal: her parents were, for the most part, civil, and she had her best friend. In fact, in high school she and Jayden finally started dating, after a long few years of Clare having a puppy-love crush on him. Things started to change after they started to date, though. Jayden was very controlling and when they finally, well, did it, he became downright cruel. He got what he wanted, and decided after that that it was okay to treat Clare like dirt. He insulted her, screamed at her, and when she did try to break it off with him the first time, ended up getting physically violent and actually hitting her. She didn't know what happened to the best friend she knew, but she still stayed with him, trying to get him back to the way he used to be.
That didn't happen, though. Things only got worse, and Clare's trust was beginning to break. It was her mom that found out about Jayden hitting her, at this point more than that first time, and she threatened to call the police. Clare begged her not to and told her that she'd break up with Jayden, no questions asked. She did break it off with him, over the phone with her mom in the room just to prove it to her that she went through with it. Her life at school became worse after that. Jayden told people that he'd been the one to end the relationship because he caught Clare cheating, and though she tried to deny it, they believed him over her.
Home was no safe haven from this either. Her parents started fighting again, and after one monster blowout between the two of them, her dad stormed out again. This time, Clare was both furious and heartbroken. He'd promised that he wouldn't do anything like this again, but he did, and at this point her trust was shattered. She built up her wall and made it through the rest of her senior year in a fog, just wanting to get by so she could get out. Her dad would call, but Clare refused to answer. Her parents were officially divorced the summer after her senior year, and finally, she had the chance to get away. Her mom told her that she planned on moving to a little town in Washington, and that Clare could either stay in North Carolina and go to college there, or come stay with her in the town of Forks.
She went to Forks with her mom and applied for college in Seattle. The two of them were both getting the fresh start they needed, and a friend of her mom even was able to get Clare a job as a teacher's aid at the elementary school to help her get experience in the field of teaching for after college. She's been helping out in a second grade classroom since fall on the days that she doesn't have class herself, and it's been keeping her mind busy and helping her get, well, happy again. She adores her students and they love her right back. She's living in a little house with her mom for now and has talked with her dad over the phone a couple of times. She couldn't stay as angry as she was because, well, she missed him. Now she's just trying to get by in this new town and start over, and just forget all of the people in her hometown.
